It’s some extra money you could put towards quality moving services. This easy rug makeover is so simple and almost free if you already have some paint on hand:
If you need or want to add a simple border to a plain rug, you first need such a rug. You can pick one up at Home Depot {which can cost around $20). Maybe you want an easy rug makeover because you have such an ordinary-looking grey flat rug without even binding on the edges.- So start by laying your rug out and mark a border on it all the way around it with chalk.
- We decided to mark ours every few inches, 6 inches in since that’s how wide we wanted the border to be for a minimalistic look. You can, of course, make it other sizes depending on the look you desire. The possibilities are truly endless.
- You could also create other patterns, zig zag, chevron or use a stencil. Finally, use painters tape and line it all the way around the rug. This will give you a precise area to paint, the outside part that is 6 inches wide in our case.
Painting the rug in a few easy steps for a perfect makeover
Then after we had finished taping the outline, we had a line all the way around the rug which basically created a frame. You can, of course, make all kinds of shapes with the tape. But we went for a sleek, simple outline that created a really neat and elegant design that can elevate any room. But in case your rug and furniture or the floor are of similar shades, you want the rug border to contrast with those. So you can go for a pop of color, or the evergreen white or black, which will visually stand out.- We have simply taken regular old latex wall paint and rolled it onto the border area of the carpet. We used 2 heavy coats because the fiber of the rug soaks up the paint really easily. One coat was definitely not going to be enough, but with two it was perfect.
- To make sure you don’t get paint on the floor you are working on, lay some old newspapers down under the border. That way you will be sure you won’t have any paint anywhere else but where you absolutely need it.
- We advise you to let the rug dry for as much as one week. Just to make sure it is definitely dry, depending on its fiber, density and knit. And that’s it! An easy rug makeover that almost comes free. You will be at awe with how transforming one pop of color could be to your new home. And also, don’t forget to have fun doing it!
