Moving Tips & Guides

The Complete Moving Checklist

Ten sections and 89 tasks, from eight weeks out through your first week in the new home. Tick items as you go and your progress saves in your browser, or download a blank copy and work off paper. Each section links to the guides and services that help with that step.

01 8 Weeks Out 0 of 9

This is your planning week. Confirm building rules, elevator and insurance requirements, and any parking permits early, then map out your timeline and budget. Our guide on building a realistic moving timeline walks through it step by step. If your closing and move-out dates may not line up, ask about storage between homes now.

02 6 Weeks Out 0 of 9

Time to choose your mover. Get written estimates, verify licensing, and read what each estimate covers before you compare numbers. A non-binding quote and a written not-to-exceed quote are not the same thing. You can request a free written quote from Evolution, and if you are leaving the state, read how our long distance moving is priced.

03 4 Weeks Out 0 of 9

Declutter before you pack. Every box you do not move is money you do not spend. Start a moving inventory list as you sort, and if you are moving a parent to a smaller home, our downsizing tips for seniors can help.

04 3 Weeks Out 0 of 9

Paperwork week. Address changes, records, and utilities take longer than people expect, and a missed transfer means a dark house on arrival. Moving with children? See our tips on choosing the right school before you request records.

05 2 Weeks Out 0 of 9

Packing gets serious. Label every box by destination room, not by contents, so the crew can place it without asking. Use our guides on packing fragile items and packing clothes, or book our professional packing service and skip the tape gun.

06 1 Week Out 0 of 9

Final confirmations. This is the week to catch anything that would become a problem at 8 a.m. on move day. If your building needs a certificate of insurance, request it from our team now so it arrives on time.

07 2–3 Days Out 0 of 8

Almost everything should be in a box by now. What is left is the detail work. Busy parents can lean on our packing tips for busy moms, and our guide on involving kids in packing keeps little helpers busy.

08 Moving Day 0 of 9

Walk the property with the crew before they start and again before they leave. Ten minutes at each end prevents almost every dispute. Here is what to expect from our local movers on the day.

09 Delivery Day 0 of 8

Direct the crew as they unload. Where a box lands now is where you will be unpacking it later.

10 First Week In 0 of 10

Unpack in the order you actually live: beds, bathroom, kitchen, then everything else. Our new home cleaning guide helps you start fresh, and if you are new to the state, read up on the cost of living in Texas.

How to Use This Checklist

Work backwards from your move date. If you have less than eight weeks, start at the section that matches your timeline and pull the earlier items forward. The licensing check and the written estimate in the six-week section are the two you should never skip, however late you are starting.

Those two items do more for your move than the rest combined: verifying your mover’s USDOT number, and getting the price in writing as a binding or not-to-exceed total. Everything else is logistics.

Evolution Moving Company is a carrier, not a broker. Our own W-2 crews load your home and our own trucks drive it, and every estimate is a written not-to-exceed total. We serve Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Bedford, and New Braunfels. Want this checklist reviewed against a real quote? Get your free quote or call (682) 651-5505.

Frequently Asked Questions

Moving Checklist Questions

When should I start a moving checklist?
Eight weeks before your move date is comfortable. That leaves time to get written estimates, check licensing, declutter, and handle utilities and records without rushing. If you have less time, start at the section that matches your timeline. Our guide to building a moving timeline shows how to compress it.
What should I do first when planning a move?
Confirm the rules at both addresses. Building policies, elevator reservations, certificate of insurance requirements, and truck parking dictate what is even possible on move day, and they are the items most likely to derail a schedule if you find out about them late.
How far in advance should I book movers?
Two to three weeks in the off season, and four to six weeks for summer, month end, the last two weeks of August, and holiday weekends. Evolution holds local dates with a one-hour deposit, and interstate moves take $500 per truck. Request a free quote to lock in your date.
What should go in the essentials box?
One day of clothes per person, medication, phone chargers, toiletries, toilet paper, basic tools, a box cutter, bedding, snacks, and pet supplies. It rides in your car, not on the truck.
What can movers not put on the truck?
Hazardous and perishable goods: propane, gasoline, aerosols, paint, fireworks, ammunition, and food that spoils. Plants and pets travel with you. See our general moving FAQs for more, and your coordinator sends the full non-allowables list with your quote.
How do I check whether a moving company is legitimate?
Look up the USDOT number on the FMCSA SAFER database and confirm the name, address, and insurance on file match what the company told you. Then ask directly whether they are a carrier or a broker. Evolution operates under USDOT 2467590 and TX DMV 006779351C as a carrier — our own crews and our own trucks.
Should I pack myself or hire packing services?
Packing yourself saves money. Having the crew pack saves days and shifts liability, since boxes packed by the mover are treated differently in a claim. Many customers choose fragile-only packing for the kitchen, art, and electronics. See our packing services or our tips on packing fragile items yourself.
How much should I tip movers?
Tipping is optional. When customers do tip, $5 to $10 per mover per hour on a local move, or $50 to $100 per mover on a full-day long distance load, is a common range. Tip each mover directly rather than handing a lump sum to the crew lead.
Does my checklist progress save?
Yes. Ticked items save in your own browser, so you can close the tab and come back. Clearing your browser data or switching devices will reset it — download your checklist if you want a copy that travels.
Can Evolution help me build a timeline for my specific move?
Yes. Book a video or in-home survey and your coordinator will walk through your dates, building rules, and inventory, then send a written not-to-exceed quote and a timeline built around your closing or lease date. Find your nearest team in Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, or Bedford.
